I’ve been talking with a number of business owners over the past couple of months, and they’re pretty distraught over a couple of things, and they both have to do with their people and a massive labor shortage. On one hand, people are leaving their jobs at a drastic rate and leaving business owners in the lurch. On the other hand, business owners are trying to hire for lots of open positions, but they can’t seem to get anyone to want to apply and come onboard.
These are both indicative of what’s being called the Great Resignation. Millions of workers are quitting their jobs, and it’s happening at an alarmingly, unusual rate that we’ve never really seen before.
So what can you do? How can you keep your best employees from jumping ship for greener pastures? How can you curb the Great Resignation in your organization?
If you know me, then you can already guess that what I’m going to share as some of the best ways to retain and engage your employees – and more easily hire new employees – all center around simplifying your team members’ experience.
Now as you hear about these practices that need to be instilled into your business in 2021, you may be tempted to think, “Well those are all well and good, Matt. But my business is different. My industry’s different. We aren’t able to do any of that.”
My advice to you here is to rethink what you can and can’t do. Instead of saying “We cant do that.” Say “What if we could do that?” or “How might we be able to instill that into what we do?”
So take a listen and learn some key practices that’ll help you curb the Great Resignation from affecting your team and losing your most valuable people. And if you really do it right, you’ll even be able to recruit valuable high performers as they resign from their organizations.
